Getting Prepared for the Flu Season

Even though H1N1 (swine flu) has been circulating since last spring, we need to start getting prepared for this year’s seasonal flu. Both of these types of influenza have similar respiratory symptoms; however, children with H1N1 may also have vomiting and diarrhea. Sometimes it can be difficult for parents to know whether their child has a cold or influenza. Click here to view the differences.

The influenza virus spreads from person to person by having close contact with someone who is coughing, sneezing, and from contaminated surfaces. Those considered to be at risk for complications from both seasonal and H1N1 are similar. The major differences are that pregnant women and younger patients seem to be at a slightly higher risk to contract H1N1, possibly because older patients have developed immunity to similar viruses over the years.

There are ways to protect yourself and your children from getting the flu.

  • Everyone should cover their cough. Either use a tissue and dispose of it immediately or cough and sneeze into your sleeve or elbow.
  • Keep hands away from your face.
  • Most of these viruses are spread after a person touches a contaminated area (surfaces and/or other people), and then touches their face. Proper and frequent hand washing is very important.  Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds (try singing Happy Birthday twice). Hand sanitizers with at least 62% alcohol may be used if rubbed on hands and allowed to air dry.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick persons.
  • Stay out of school and work if you sick. You may return once fever free (without medication) for 24 hours.
  • Get the flu vaccine. Once we receive seasonal vaccine for flu clinics, appointments will be scheduled. H1N1 vaccine will also be offered once received by our office.

Currently, if your child gets the flu, only symptomatic treatment with medication to reduce fever, bed rest, and plenty of fluids is recommended. Do not give aspirin containing medications to anyone with a viral illness! Antiviral medications are not recommended unless there is a high risk for complications. These are given after consultation with a physician.

Understanding the usual course of influenza may help you decide when to seek medical attention. Flu symptoms usually resolve over about a 5 day period and may include fever, aches, cough, scratchy throat, and with H1N1, vomiting and diarrhea.. Please call for an appointment if the following occurs:

  • Your child develops flu like symptoms, seems to improve over the first few days, then gets worse
  • Your child is at high risk for complications (infants less than 6 months and those with chronic illnesses)
  • Symptoms persist after the usual course should have ended
  • You are concerned that your child may have developed a complication

For additional information, click http://www.ncpublichealth.com/ and select “Protect Yourself against 2009 H1N1 flu” on the right side of the page.

Raleigh Pediatrics Vaccine Recommendations

The physicians at Raleigh Pediatrics firmly believe that all children should receive recommended vaccines.  We encourage all our parents to read our Vaccine Policy and to discuss any concerns with one of our physicians prior to your next checkup.

General Information
Sports Physicals

Wake County, Johnston County, and Harnett County Public Schools require Middle School and High School athletes to have a complete physical exam within 365 days prior to the first practice or tryout date. If your child desires to participate in a school sport, be sure to schedule a yearly physical for your child.  For more information regarding school sports requirements, please refer to the following websites:

Wake County Public Schools

Johnston County Public Schools

Harnett County Public Schools

Kindergarten Physicals

School systems in this area require that all children receive a complete physical within 365 days of starting kindergarten. This consists of obtaining height, weight, blood pressure, vision screen, audiogram, labwork, and updating immunizations. Each county provides a form for the physician's office to complete which should be returned to your child's school after the physical exam. Please bring this form with you to the visit. If the physical is not performed before school begins, you will have a thirty day grace period to get the exam and to complete the form. These appointment slots fill up quickly, so please call early to schedule your child's kindergarten physical.

Extended Hours

If your child has an urgent medical problem which requires care outside of regular office hours, he or she may be seen by appointment in either the Raleigh or the Garner office in the evenings, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. The Raleigh office is open for emergencies only on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Our appointment line is open from 8:00 until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Parents desiring to bring an acutely ill child to be seen during these times should call the main office at (919) 872-0250. Please note that there is an additional charge for late stay and weekend office visits. This may not be covered by your insurance.

For problems that arise outside of these hours, or if there is no answer at the office number, please call the answering service at (919) 831-5394. They will refer your call to the Pediatric Advice Line or contact the pediatrician on call. Please do not call the Pediatric Advice Line directly.
